Blueberries are a wonderful addition to any homestead. The berries are a deliciously healthy treat that are often costly at the store. To grow them at home is a wonderful way to save money, have blueberries year after year, and produce your own food from the homestead.
I reached out to my friends at Nature Hills Nursery to get some information from them on what varieties of blueberries they recommend for the cold winter climates. Their plant expert (who also lives in Wisconsin) gave me some recommendations for the best blueberries to grow in Wisconsin’s cold climate.

1. Northcountry Blueberry Bush
PRICE: Currently marked down from $59.99 to $39.59 at Nature Hills Nursery!
The Northcountry Blueberry Bush is a great blueberry bush for those who are looking for a container blueberry variety or a variety that needs very little space! This is the number one choice for those seeking to grow blueberries in colder climates because of its beautiful fruit color, sweet and wild blueberry flavor, and very productive blueberry plant. This plant has been known to produce 3-5 pounds of fruit from one plant!
This blueberry variety requires very acidic soil (pH of 4.5-5.5). If you’re wondering if your soil is acidic, you can do a soil tester kit ($14.99 for a 10 pack) or check out this map from Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey.
Top Things to Note:
- Should be number one choice for cold weather blueberry varieties!
- Grows to be 2-3 feet tall with a 4 foot spread
- Can be planted in containers
- Can produce 3-5 pounds of wild blueberry tasting blueberries per plant
- Early-mid season blueberry production
- Prefers well-drained acidic soil (pH of the soil 4.5-5.5) and full sun
- Great for fresh eating, baking, and preserves

2. Northblue Blueberry Bush
PRICE: Currently marked down from $59.99 to $39.59 at Nature Hills Nursery!
The Northblue Blueberry Bush is one of the best blueberries to grow in Wisconsin because of its cold hardiness, small size, and large berries that it produces. The berries from this bush are best used for fresh eating, baking, or preserving in jams, jellies, or syrups.
This blueberry bush is a self-fruitful bush, but it will produce larger crops with a cross pollinator like Northcountry (see above).
Top Things to Note:
- Reaches 18″-24″ tall at maturity
- Able to be grown in containers
- Produces large mid-season blueberries that are great for fresh eating, preserves, and drying
- Self-fruitful, but produces better crop when cross-pollinated with another blueberry bush (Northcountry is recommended).
- Needs acidic soil for best crop (pH of 4.5-5.5)
- Likes to be mulched to retain moisture and insulate root system
3. Northsky Blueberry Bush

Like the other two varieties before, the Northsky Blueberry is another blueberry bush developed specifically for colder weather- making it a top choice as one of the best blueberries to grow in Wisconsin’s colder climate.
Top Things to Note:
- Dwarf variety of blueberry, growing to be about 2 feet tall with a 3 foot spread
- Produces small, mild wild blueberry tasting blueberries
- Compact size makes it good for growing in containers
- Very cold tolerant (can survive -40 degrees Fahrenheit!)
- Needs well-drained, acidic soil (look for soil with a pH of 5.5 or lower)
- Likes to be mulched to keep shallow roots cool
- Needs another blueberry bush for pollination (suggested Northcountry or Northblue)
