I don’t know about you, but there’s something about spring decorating that really brings me a lot of joy. Really, there’s just a lot of hope in putting away the snowmen and “let it snow” signs and replacing them with the hopefulness of the new life coming with spring.

And though I love my house to be simple and beautiful, I also am very frugal when it comes to decorations. Very rarely am I going to buy something to decorate my house, even if I do think I really want it! And pussy willow branches were something I really wanted for decorating my house for spring. So I was left with a dilemma (and really not a very big problem in the grand scheme of things, but I digress…). I could wait until the natural pussy willow flowers start to come out and use them to decorate…but that could be weeks before I could use them. Or my other option was to buy some artificial pussy willow branches from the store to use as decorations.

I really didn’t like either of these options, so today I got a little creative and created my own DIY pussy willow branches! They’re really beautiful and look really realistic if you ask me! Plus, as an added bonus, I can use these again and again year after year. And they literally cost me cents to make! So today, I want to show you how you can make your own DIY pussy willow branches so you can frugally decorate for spring too.

Materials for DIY Pussy Willow Branches

DIY pussy willow branches sit on a table with scissors and a hot glue gun in the background.

This beautiful spring decoration comes together with basic materials that you more than likely already have at home!

Branches: You’ll want to head outside and find branches that have multiple small buds on them. The best types of branches are going to be from shrubby little bushes that often live in swampy or wet areas. Carefully cut your branches using a pruning shears.

Hot Glue Gun and Glue: You will use the hot glue gun to attach the “fuzz” to your branches.

Q-Tips: The Q-tips will work as the fuzz for your DIY pussy willow branches. You won’t need many Q-tips; just a few will do the trick. You will wan to cut the small cotton swab off of the Q-tip, and if you choose, you can even cut those cotton swabs in half for the project.

Steps to Creating the DIY Pussy Willow Branches

  1. Gather Sticks. The first step in creating these DIY pussy willow branches is to go outside and find sticks! You’ll want sticks that have small buds on them, as these are what real pussy willow branches look like.
  2. Cut Q-Tips. Cut the cotton off of your Q-tips. This cotton will serve as the fuzzy pussy willow flowers. I cut each cotton piece in half to make the pieces smaller and to stretch the Q-tips further, but it’s not necessary to do this.
  3. Add Cotton to Branches. Find the buds on your branches. Tuck the cotton in as close as you can between the branch and the bud, using your hot glue gun to secure it. Continue adding cotton to the buds along the stick. I left the bottom buds without cotton for my DIY pussy willow branches. Repeat this process until you have your desired amount of branches.
  4. Decorate! I placed my completed DIY pussy willow branches in a white pitcher that had once belonged to my great-great grandparents on their farm. It’s really special to me, and I always love to fill it up with flowers and greenery for the seasons. If you’re looking to purchase a pitcher, Amazon has a lot of beautiful antique pitchers to choose from.
