Gifts for Homesteaders for Food Production and Preservation

Homesteaders are seeking to be as self-sustainable from their property as they possibly can. Their goals are to grow and produce their own food, which is no easy feat. To really bring a smile to your homesteading friend’s face, try some of these gifts for food production on the homestead.

Under $25 Food Production and Preservation Gifts for Homesteaders

Let’s start with some small, but important ideas. These gifts may not be very expensive, but they’re still excellent gifts for homesteaders.

1. Canning Jars and Lids

If the homesteader in your life preserves their own food, they will surely love the fact that they won’t have to buy their own canning lids and jars this year. We always stick to “name brand” when it comes to canning lids and jars; there is literally nothing worse than all of the hard work of preserving going totally to waste because jars didn’t seal properly.

Pick up your own jar lids on Amazon. For regular mouth, click here and for wide mouth, click here. Not sure which one to get? Get a pack of each! Homesteaders will be happy with either (or both!).

2. Flour Sack Towels and Cheesecloths

You can never have too many of these! Whether they’re being used for drying dishes, straining pumpkin, or filtering seeds out of jelly juice, homesteaders will appreciate new flour sack towels and cheese cloths.

Pick up some flour sack towels from Amazon here.
Grab your cheesecloths here.

3. Seed Packets

Seeds are wonderful gifts, and a chance to give your homesteading friend or family member a gift that will keep on giving. Flowers are great too, as pollinators help gardens grow and thrive.

For great organic seeds, check out High Mowing Organic Seeds. They have a lot to offer at reasonable prices, and are all organic, non-GMO seeds.

4. Gardening Tools

Homesteaders like to be out in the garden, so a gift that helps them out in the garden is going to be very appreciated! You can buy kits (like this one), or individual tools that might help them out as they work in their garden.

Some of my favorite gardening tools are the Hori-Hori Weeding/Digging Knife to cut out those pesky rhizomes from quack grass:

I also really like a hand hoe to weed around plants quickly and effectively.

5. Bread Pans

For the homesteader who is baking their own bread each week, new bread pans are a welcome addition. Especially if they are looking to make multiple loaves of bread each week! Having multiple pans means being able to bake multiple loaves of bread at once, saving time and energy.

I have always used the basic nonstick baking bread pans, but there are some really beautiful cast iron bread pans that are on the market these days too (these are, however, most costly and not under $25).

6. Sourdough Starter

Did you know you could buy sourdough starter? Well, you can! If you don’t want to make your own sourdough starter, you can buy a starter with live cultures all ready for you to use right away.

7. Reusable Egg Cartons

This gift for homesteaders helps organize all of those chicken eggs in a clean, reusable, sustainable way.

8. Salad Spinner

A great gift for homesteaders is a salad spinner! This simple, easy to use tool is a huge hit with homesteaders because it allows you to wash and clean your salad without it becoming soggy. Keep your garden salad fresh and delicious with a salad spinner.

$25+ Food Production and Preservation Gifts for Homesteaders

If you’re looking to spend a little more money, there are definitely some other great gift options that the homesteader in your life will love!

1. Berry Bushes

Whether it’s blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, or even cherries, berry bushes are excellent gifts for homesteaders because they are able to continue to give year after year.

Find out what grows best in your zone, then pick one out for that homesteader in your life!

2. Fruit Trees

Fruit trees are a great gift for homesteaders because of their annual production of fruit! They give homesteaders a way to continuously provide food for their families year after year. If you’re looking for cold-hardy trees, be sure to check out this post where I detail some excellent varieties to consider for colder climates.

Nature Hills Nursery has a huge selection of different fruit trees that would make great gifts for the homesteader in your life. Be sure to check the hardiness of the tree before you purchase it, though. You’ll want to select trees that are able to grow in your growing zone.

Looking to go all out and get that special homesteader in your life a larger gift? Perhaps you’re giving a wedding present or even an anniversary gift. Whatever it may be, these food production gifts for homesteaders are going to be super appreciated and valued!

3. Chicken Plucker

Now the Chicken Plucker is not a cheap gift by any means…but for the homesteader who raises their own meat birds and is ready to start the processing phase at home, this tool is a lifesaver. Not only does it make the process of removing feathers from the carcass easy, it saves a ton of time so your homesteader can get back to working on other projects. This would make a great wedding or anniversary gift for a homesteading couple.

4. Pressure Canner without Gasket

My grandpa talks about this one all the time; he really thinks this is an amazing product! The thing that makes this pressure canner so interesting is that it doesn’t have a gasket, which makes it ultimately easy to use. Again, this one isn’t super cost effective, but it could make a great gift for homesteaders, and definitely one that would get used again and again as they preserve their food each year.

5. Meat Grinder and Sausage Stuffer

This is a great gift for homesteaders because it gives them a chance to preserve their own meat in different forms! With the meat grinder, you can turn venison and beef into hamburger and pork chops into ground pork. This particular electric meat grinder comes also with a sausage stuffer, so you can make your own sausages at home, too. We personally have this one and have made many sticks of sausage with it.

6. Smoker

A smoker will give the homesteader in your life another option when it comes to food preparation. Whether they’re smoking dinner or smoking sausages, this is a great gift option.

7. Dehydrator

A food dehydrator is an excellent gift for homesteaders because of its abilities to preserve food to last longer. Homesteaders will surely enjoy the gift of food preservation through this great tool.

8. Vacuum Sealer

We use our vacuum sealer all the time. We’ve used it for storing venison, vegetables, fish- you name it, it can store it! You can even use it to store clothes in small spaces. It’s a great gift for homesteaders; one that will definitely be appreciated and used often!

We have a FoodSaver brand vacuum sealer, and we really love it.

9. Applesauce Maker

We love this tool! We use the traditional hand-crank one, which works just fine. My dad has even removed their handle to use a drill and drill bit to make the whole process go even faster (and with less manpower). There are, of course, automatic applesauce makers out there, too, like this one from Ball.

Tools for Homesteaders

Working on a homestead can be easier with the right tools. These gifts for homesteaders are practical, useful tools that are sure to be appreciated and valued.

1. Rechargeable LED Headlamp

This truly is one of our most utilized tools here on our homestead! It makes a great gift for homesteaders because it allows them to continue working outside, even in the dark, while continuing to be able to see. This headlamp is one of my favorites because it has a great range for light, but also is rechargeable, so we don’t have to continuously buy batteries for it day in and day out.

2. Working Hands Cream

This is a lifesaver! This hand cream is such a great gift for homesteaders because at some point or another, people working outside are going to have dry, cracked hands. This works great, heals up cracks, and is a product we use each and every winter.

3. Pitchfork

Cleaning out pens isn’t always the most glamorous job, but it’s a job that needs to be done for many homesteaders. Giving your homesteading friend the gift of a good pitchfork can make that job go a lot faster and easier. This manure pitchfork has 6 tines, which makes cleaning up straw in beddings a lot easier than a four tine pitchfork, and is definitely our choice.

4. Noise Cancelling Headphones

Protect your hearing! Chainsaws, tractors, gunshots, lawnmowers, and other farm machinery that you’re around day in and day out will eventually take a toll on your hearing. Take the time to protect your precious hearing- you will thank me later!

We have these and really love them. They keep the loud noises out and provide entertainment through the radio, should you choose to use that feature. This is a great gift for homesteaders!

5. Wheelbarrow

Whether you’re hauling vegetables back from the garden, firewood to the woodstove, or manure from the barn, a wheelbarrow can make work a lot easier and a lot faster. Here are a few with top notch reviews from Amazon. We don’t currently have one, but would really love one (family members out there looking for gift ideas, hint-hint)!

  • Heavy Duty Collapsible Wagon (holds up to 400 pounds) $149
  • Heavy Duty Gorilla Cart (holds up to 1200 pounds) $189
  • Heavy Duty Gorilla Cart + Dump Cart (holds up to 600 pounds) $298

6. Solar Powered Fencer

One of the best gifts for homesteaders is the gift of reassurance! Being able to power your fence in areas that are not accessible by traditional electricity can be made possible this solar powered fencer. This particular model is ranked “best of the best”, plus it’s American-made, which is a win for Americans hoping to purchase from national businesses.

7. Generator

While we’re on the topic of power, a generator can be a more expensive gift, but a useful one, for homesteaders. Generators can provide power for building projects in isolated locations, powering a milk machine, and keeping the farm running if the power goes out. They’re super handy to have around!

This generator from Champion has great reviews at a relatively low price ($634).

Another generator with great reviews but is a bit higher price is a Generac 7676 GP8000E. My husband has used this one many times and has only good things to say about it. It’s a loud machine, but very useful and dependable.

Clothing Gifts for Homesteaders

Being prepared for the weather, especially in Wisconsin winters, is a huge part of homesteading successfully. It’s really hard to do chores in -20 degree weather when you’re not dressed right for the job. These clothing gifts will ensure that the homesteader in your life is dressed and ready for their jobs ahead of them.

1. Boots

My husband and I both love our Lacrosse boots because of their dependability. They’re warm in the winter, waterproof, and hold up well to the daily grind of chores.

We personally own these boots, and really like them:

  • Lacrosse Men’s Alpha Thermal 16″ Waterproof 7.0MM Outdoor Boot
  • Lacrosse Women’s Alpha Thermal 14″ 7.0MM Waterproof Work Boot

2. Carhartt Bib Overalls

Carhartt just has a reputation for being dependable workwear, and we’ve found that to be true for us too. You can find Carhartt bibs for winter that are flannel-lined and warm, or you can find lighter bibs for work in spring, summer, and fall. Whichever you choose, the homesteader in your life is sure to get their wear out of these dependable and useful overalls.

3. Dickies Socks

These are the socks my husband swears by because they stay up during the day and are really comfortable. They’re also moisture-wicking, which is really nice. These are a nice, affordable, and always needed gift.

4. Deerskin Gloves

Deerskin gloves are super nice because they are soft and flexible. This makes it easier to work on cold days when you need your hands to be covered, but also need your hands to be flexible and able to grab a hammer or other tool.

You can get deerskin gloves here.

5. Thermal Underwear

Thermal underwear, or long johns, are great gifts for homesteaders. They are always needed, appreciated, and are a useful, practical gift that your homesteader will really be appreciate of.

Final Thoughts

Homesteaders, generally, are practical, minimalistic people. As you look for gifts for homesteaders, be thinking about gifts that they really could use, that will make a real difference in their lives, and that can be valued and appreciated assets to their home.
