What are the ingredients in homemade flour tortillas?
These homemade flour tortillas come together with four basic ingredients that you probably already have around the homestead:
- Flour
- Lard
- Salt
- Water
That’s it! I told you it was a really basic, easy recipe! How can you go wrong with that?!
Tools for homemade flour tortillas
You won’t need a whole lot to make homemade flour tortillas! Here are my essential tools for making these:
- Apron (working with flour can get a little messy!)
- Mixing Bowl
- Rolling Pin
- Cast Iron Skillet
How to make homemade flour tortillas
The steps to these are really quite simple and take about five minutes to mix and another five to cook.
In a large bowl, mix together your flour and salt.
Cut your cold lard into the flour and salt mixture, much like you were making a pie crust.
Slowly add 1/4 cup of water and mix with your hands.
Add your second 1/4 cup of water and knead together until it forms a dough that sticks together. If needed, add an additional 1 T. of water.
Split your dough into 10 equal sized balls.
Roll each dough ball out with a rolling pin as thin as you can without it breaking. You really want it to be paper thin!
Heat your cast iron pan or skillet to medium-high heat and and add another 2 tablespoons of lard (or another cooking oil).
Once the pan is hot, add the first tortilla. After about 30 seconds, you should see notice brown spots on the tortilla and some bubbling. Flip it over and cook the other side for 30 seconds until it, too, is brown and bubbling.
Remove the tortilla from the heat and repeat with the remaining tortillas.
Is it cheaper to make your own homemade flour tortillas than to buy them?
It absolutely can be cheaper to make your own homemade flour tortillas than to buy them. Let’s take a look at some numbers here.
At Walmart, you can buy tortillas for a variety of prices, depending on the brand. The cheapest store bought tortillas (the Walmart brand) are listed for $1.98 for 10 medium sized tortillas. That’s pretty cheap!
Cost Breakdown by the Ingredients
To make your own homemade flour tortillas, it will cost even less! These tortillas come with just a handful of ingredients, with the main one being flour. Let’s look at the breakdown of the cost per ingredient for the tortillas:
- Water (free!)
- 2 cups of Flour: One 5 pound bag of the cheapest flour from Walmart costs $2.12. There are about 16 cups of flour in one 5 pound bag, which makes each cup of flour come to about 13.5 cents. That’s pretty cheap! With that in mind, 2 cups of flour will cost about 27 cents.
- Salt: The cheapest salt costs $0.54 for 26 ounces of salt. You’ll need 1/2 tsp for this recipe. One ounce of salt is equivalent to 6 teaspoons of salt, which means that there are 156 teaspoons of salt per container. That means each teaspoon of salt costs $0.003. This means that 1/2 teaspoon of salt for this recipe will cost $0.0015. That’s pretty cheap.
- Lard: We render our own lard, which makes this a free product for us. But just for conversation, let’s look at how much lard might cost to purchase it. From Thrive Market, you can get 10 oz. of lard for $9.99. You’ll need 2 tablespoons of lard for this recipe, and there are 20 tablespoons in 10 ounces. That means your 2 tablespoons of lard will cost $1.
Grand Total: Cost Comparison
Are you ready for the grand total?
Store Bought Flour Tortillas: $1.98 for 10 tortillas
Homemade Flour Tortillas: $1.03 for 10 tortillas (with purchased lard) or $0.2715 with home rendered lard
That’s almost a whole dollar’s worth of savings if you purchase the lard, plus better flavor and the comfort of knowing exactly what has gone into your food. If you have your own lard already, it only costs a little over a quarter to make 10 tortillas! This just goes to show that it absolutely can be cheaper to make your own flour tortillas.
