Homesteading Quote #1: “Learn to fall in love with nature. When you truly love nature and the design God has for this world, there is nothing more beautiful than seeing the masterpiece unfold. Each and every detail becomes an extravagant miracle to give thanks for each day.”
One of the best parts of homesteading is being out in nature. If you’re looking to find some peace and start living a homesteading lifestyle, then this homesteading quote is the one for you. Learning to fall in love with nature is one of the most essential parts of homesteading. For it is through nature and her gifts that you start to see the divine work of God and how truly amazing the system He has created for us is. The dependency we all have on nature to survive is an intricate and delicate gift, perfectly designed by the Creator. We should all fall in love with the Earth because without her gifts, without her hospitality, and without her creatures, we cannot be.
Homesteading Quote #2: “One thing that will never change is the passage of time. Though the hands of those who have homestead before us can no longer build, through preservations of their traditions, their stories live on.”
If I could go back in time to talk to my great-grandparents who first homesteaded the land that I grew up barefoot on, my heart would sing for joy. But, time is always moving, and their feet no longer walk this Earth. All that we have left are the traditions they’ve passed on and the stories they’ve shared.
When we, too, embark on these traditions and follow in the same path that they did, a part of our ancestors live on through each of us. By continuing on the traditions of that they once did as a part of our own daily lives, we can feel a connection to those who’ve lived this homesteading life long before it was a choice. As you knead the bread with your hands, as you strongly squeeze the teat of the milk cow, as you walk the long gravel path, think of your ancestors and the pioneers before you who have done the same.
Homesteading Quote #3: “Let them grow up amongst the wild flowers and learn to be as wild and free as the wind that blows their hair and the sun that tans their face.”
A child on a homestead learns so much each day. As they grow up dirty and outside, their minds are being shaped to love the Earth and to be a caretaker of her. While they work alongside you hoping to be a help to their moms and dads, their work ethic is being formed and responsibility is being learned. As they mourn the loss of an animal alongside of you, they learn the fragility of this life and recognize the importance of living for the moment. This is one of my favorite homesteading quotes because this is what shaped me to be who I am today.
Homesteading Quote #4: “And when you are lost, which you are sure to be, return back to Mother Earth. Sit with her a while. What can she teach you?”
Living life on a homestead can be challenging. Animals can get sick and die. Garden crops can fail. Plans can crumble. It’s during these times you might feel like giving up.
When you’re feeling lost and problems happen, the best source of information is nature. Are mice getting into your chicken feed every night? What does nature do to control mice? It adds predators like owls, foxes, and cats. Can you build an owl house to help attract owls to your property at night?
Nature holds the answers to so many of our problems on the homestead. We just need to learn to listen.
Homesteading Quote #5: “And when you get to the end of your life, what will you say? Did you listen to your heart, and follow that path within or did you give up on your dreams in exchange for the world?”
This was a big reason we decided to actually start homesteading. Many nights, my husband and I would go for a walks and talk about what we would do if we had our own homestead. And for so long, it was only a dream. It didn’t seem like it could ever become reality. We were in too deep. The world demanded too much of us. How could we ever change now?
When my grandpa died, I took a good hard look at my life and how I was living. I really evaluated if I was happy with my choices. I asked myself if I were to die tomorrow, would I be proud of the path I had chosen? Or was there something else that had been calling to me…
Choosing to follow your dreams isn’t easy, especially if it goes against the grain. Don’t let that stop you. You have one life and at the end of it, only you get to decide if you lived the way you wanted. Don’t wait until it’s too late to make the choice to follow your dreams. Act today. Go now. Be who you want to be. Don’t let the world tell you how to live.
Homesteading Quote #6: “Homesteading: Choosing to take a harder path because there is beauty in each labor that cannot be bought in a store.”
This is one of the truest homesteading quotes because of the world we live in today. Yes, it would be 100% easier to go to the store and buy a gallon of milk than it is to milk the cow. Yes, it would totally simplify life if I picked up a dozen eggs at the grocery store. And yes- I’d have a lot more free time if I wasn’t spending all summer in the garden and then canning all fall.
Choosing to take the harder path gives you something else besides convenience. It gives you experiences and memories.
This fall when we preserved applesauce well into the night, our six-year-old son was tickled to be able to stay up and help. The smile on his face shown with pride as he helped crank the applesauce maker. As the crickets sang our soundtrack, my husband, son, and I laughed as we preserved our apples on the front porch. These are memories that will last a lifetime, both for me and my son.
Oftentimes, some of the most memorable moments are had in the least memorable events. As we picked potatoes one evening, my then three-year-old daughter and I accidentally dug out a ground wasp nest. I grabbed her and ran out of the garden as fast as I could, both of us getting stung by the wasps in our dresses. We quickly undressed and after realizing the danger had passed, collapsed together in the field, laughing while we cried.
These memories wouldn’t have been made had we not chosen to take the harder path. If we had bought applesauce and potatoes from the store, there is no story to be told. By choosing the harder path, we’re creating a life full of memories.
Homesteading Quote #7: “Homesteading: Learning that raising animals comes with a heavy test on patience, a lot of poop, and a solid reminder that animals have personalities too.”
You cannot have a list of homesteading quotes and not include one that talks about poop. Taking care of animals and raising them is an experience to say the least. They are living creatures with real personalities, thoughts, and emotions. Learning how to deal with things going differently than how you’d planned is a common occurrence for homesteaders. Cows won’t go where you want them to go. Chickens will scratch out your flowers. There will be poop everywhere. It’s a crazy ride when you’re raising animals, but there’s a lot of joy that can come with it too.

LET THEM GROW UP AMONGST THE WILDFLOWERS AND LEARN TO BE AS WILD AND FREE AS THE WIND THAT BLOWS THEIR HAIR AND THE SUN THAT TANS THEIR FACE. Was my fave!

Number 1, 2 and 6 were my favorite, but so loved them all! We’re very new to homesteading but I told my husband the other day how cool and humbling it was to think the tasks we’re doing on our little homestead are the same things that generations of people have been doing forever!

It is really amazing, isn’t it? I have a pitcher that my grandma gave to me that was my great-great grandma’s. To think about the fact that when my hands grasp it, so did theirs, it makes me stop for a minute. It’s really amazing to be able to continue to keep those traditions and people alive. Thanks for stopping by!

Lovely collection of quotes, and inspiring me to get out and do something with our property this spring. Thank you!

I’m so glad you could find some inspiration, Jamie! Thoughts of spring are what get me through hard winter nights like this one. We are expecting lows of -20 degrees Fahrenheit tonight!
