These naturally sweetened double chocolate cookies are a soft and chocolate-y cookie, deliciously sweetened with maple syrup. Make these wonderfully chocolate filled cookies next time you’re craving a chocolate snack without the guilt!
I’ve been working hard to try to lower the amount of white sugar our family is consuming. There’s a few reasons behind this, but one of the biggest ones is because we already have a lot of “free” and natural sugar available to us through our maple syrup. Every year, we tap maple trees as a small batch maple syrup operation. We’re able to produce around 50+ quarts each year for our family’s consumption. This gives me lots of room for experimentation!
These cookies came about on a night when I just really wanted some chocolate. I had just made my naturally sweetened double chocolate muffins, so I didn’t really want to make the same thing twice. My son piped up that he’d like some cookies, so I started playing around to see what I could make!
I’ve made these cookies multiple times now and have been very pleased with the result! My family seems to agree- I can’t seem to keep the cookies in the container longer than one day!
I hope you enjoy this recipe!

Ingredients for Naturally Sweetened Double Chocolate Cookies
The ingredients for these naturally sweetened double chocolate cookies are natural and basic. You probably already have most of these on hand!
- Maple Syrup: This serves as the natural sweetener in these cookies, providing the sweetness as well as a dose of vitamins and minerals.
- Butter: Butter adds flavor and richness to the cookies
- Egg: For leavening and binding
- Vanilla: I use my homemade vanilla, which is more affordable and better tasting than anything at the store!
- Unsweetened Cocoa: For chocolately goodness. It’s dryness also helps absorb some of the moisture from the maple syrup.
- Baking Soda + Baking Powder: Together, these two ingredients react to lift the cookies
- Flour: To provide structure and help hold everything together
- Mini Chocolate Chips: I always buy mini-chocolate chips rather than the regular sized ones because they tend to go a bit further than the regular.
Steps for Naturally Sweetened Double Chocolate Cookies
These cookies come together quickly to get these delicious cookies made and into your belly fast.
- Step One: Mix Wet Ingredients. Using a handheld mixer, start by mixing your softened butter, vanilla, and egg together. Then, add in the maple syrup. It’s best to use room-temperature maple syrup to prevent the butter from hardening up and forming clumps that don’t mix well.
- Step Two: Stir in Dry Ingredients. Next, you’ll stir in your baking soda, baking powder, cocoa powder, and flour. Add in your chocolate chips.
- Step Three: Preheat the Oven and Chill. Turn the oven onto 350 degrees, and place the cookie dough in the freezer until the oven is preheated.
- Step Four: Bake the Cookies. Once the oven is preheated, you can form 1-inch balls and place on a cookie sheet. Bake the cookies for 10-12 minutes (until they begin to crack), and allow them to sit for 5 minutes before removing them to a cooling rack.
Things to Consider
Because these cookies are naturally sweetened with maple syrup, there are some things to note to make the process easier.
- Because you’re naturally sweetening with maple syrup, the dough may be extra sticky. If this happens, allow it to sit a few minutes to give the flour and cocoa powder a chance to absorb some more of the liquid.
- Rolling the dough can be tricky because it is sticky. Try using wet hands to roll the dough. If that doesn’t seem to help, you can drop dough by spoonful and form those into ball shapes.
