I am all about cooking from scratch and ditching the grocery store when I can.
We eat homemade pizzas quite a bit here on the homestead, especially in summer when there are plenty of fresh vegetables for toppings and lots of tomatoes for a base. And if so much of the toppings are already homemade, it makes sense that we are making our own crust, too.
Making your own crust is really quite easy and gives you the freedom to know exactly what has gone into that food you’re feeding your family. With just a handful of basic, simple ingredients, you’re never going to be buying store bought pizza crust again!
Homemade pizza is also a great opportunity for the whole family to get into the kitchen to help. Kids will love helping to make dinner! They can easily help with spreading out the sauce, adding toppings (and stealing them to eat before they make it to the pizza), and sprinkling on cheese. You can even split the dough into smaller pieces to give them their own personal sized pizza! Whatever you choose, know that this is a great opportunity for the whole family to have fun creating dinner together.
Let’s dive into how to create this homemade pizza dough.

Ingredients
This pizza dough comes together very similarly to the way I make quick bread dough. In fact, I will sometimes double this recipe and bake a loaf (or two) of bread along with the pizza to have for the week.
To make the homemade pizza dough, you will need:
- 1 cup warm (not hot!) water
- 1 T. yeast
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 T. sugar
- 2 1/2 cups flour
These ingredients will yield enough dough for an 11×17 inch cookie sheet sized pizza.
Materials Needed
You won’t need a whole lot to make this delicious homemade pizza dough! All you really need is:
- Large mixing bowl
- Rubber spatula
- 11×17 inch cookie sheet
- Rolling pin
- Apron (optional- but check out how cute this one is!)
Process
This is really a pretty simple recipe!
- Pour warm water into the large mixing bowl.
- Add yeast, and allow it to sit for 1-2 minutes.
- Next, add your sugar (any sweetener will work- honey works great too!) and salt to your water and yeast mixture. Don’t stir.
- Lastly, add in your 2 1/2 cups of flour one cup at a time. You may need less or more depending on the feel of your dough. You’ll want to mix your dough together until it is tacky, but doesn’t stick to your hands. You’ll keep adding cups of flour until you reach this desired consistency.
- As it starts to thicken and form a less sticky dough, remove it from the bowl and place on a clean countertop covered with flour.
- Knead the dough, adding more flour, a little at a time, only if the dough becomes sticky. Knead the dough by pushing down on the ball firmly with the palm of your hand, and then folding over the “higher” spots that have not been pushed down to shape it into a ball. Flip the ball over and repeat the process. The dough should be smooth and tacky, yet not stick to your hands, and easy to shape.
- Shape the dough into a ball.
- Once you’ve formed your dough into a ball, grease your mixing bowl that you had just used and return your ball to the bowl. Cover the bowl with a towel, and set aside to rise about 10-15 minutes. I usually use this time to cut up veggies for the pizza, fry the sausage, or make the pizza sauce.
- After the dough has risen, remove the dough from the bowl.
- Using a rolling pin, roll out the dough into a long rectangle to fit your cookie sheet. If you have a smaller rolling pin, you can do this rolling process into the pan directly.
- Place your dough into the greased cookie sheet. Cover with your favorite sauce and toppings!
