Repurpose Old Christmas Cards as DIY Gift Tags

by Sadie 2 Comments

Christmas is over and you’re left with a pile of Christmas cards that were sent to you over the holiday season. It seems really wasteful to throw them away, so instead, how about repurpose those cards into DIY Christmas gift tags to add some beauty to your gifts of next season.

I love to get Christmas cards. I know to some mailing Christmas cards seems like an outdated tradition since so many of us are a fingertip away from communicating with one another, but I really feel like there’s something special about writing out a Christmas card with your hand and then sending it to someone you love. Plus, getting something special in the mailbox besides a bill is always such an exciting discovery.

But once Christmas has passed and it’s time to start moving on, you’re left with the leftover Christmas cards from those loved ones and friends who sent them. To throw them into the garbage can after just one use and after someone spent so much time creating it for you seems like such a waste. So what are you to do?

What can I do with old Christmas cards?

One of my favorite art projects to do with old Christmas cards is to repurpose them into homemade Christmas gift tags. It’s a relatively easy process and gives you a chance to go through each card individually once again, admiring all of the beauty and art that’s within it.

How do you make homemade Christmas gift tags?

To make your own homemade gift tags with old Christmas cards, look through your old Christmas cards for patterns and items that can be cut out easily. Once you’ve found something that you can cut out, carefully create a rectangle or circle shape with your scissors.

To create the standard gift tag shape, you’ll want to cut out a long rectangle out of one of your old Christmas cards. Next, take one of the short ends and snip off the corners. You’re left with a house shaped traditional name tag that no one would guess is made from a repurposed Christmas card.

After cutting out your desired pattern or shape, you can punch a hole into it using a standard hole punch. And voila! You have successfully repurposed an old Christmas card to become a beautiful new gift tag to add to one of your gifts for next Christmas. Wrap a piece of twine or even a piece of yarn around your gift, tie on your gift tag, and secure it with a bow for a beautiful and thoughtful display. You can write the gift recipient’s name on the front of the tag or the back, depending on where you think it would look best.

Adding a handmade touch to your Christmas gifts is always a thoughtful gesture. The person who receives the gift should feel extra special to know that you took the time to cut out a design, choose one that fit them best, and added it to their special gift. Who wouldn’t want to receive a gift like that?

Do you repurpose your old Christmas cards? What do you use them for?

There are so many great craft ideas on ways you can repurpose your old Christmas cards. From ornaments to even creating new Christmas cards, you can find a lot of uses for these special treasures. Rather than throw them away, see if you can find a new way to enjoy them once again. Looking for even more ideas? Check out this post here from Artsy Chicks Rule to get even more ideas.

I love this idea, Saide. I come from a family of readers, so I often give books as Christmas gifts. I have repurposed old Christmas cards into book marks. I’ve also used this as an cross-generational craft project at church. On the day that new Bibles were being presented to young people, we made book marks for Bibles using old greeting cards. We wrote Bible verses on the reverse side.

That is such a good idea to give a repurposed Christmas card bookmark as a gift in a new book. How thoughtful! I love the story about the handmade bookmarks as a gift with the new bible, too. That makes it even more special. Thank you so much for sharing, Linda! ♥
