These simple, special, and frugal Valentine’s Day ideas will help the people in your life know that they are loved and appreciated without the fuss and cost of traditional Valentine’s Day gifts.
I love the core idea of celebrating love on a special day. Love is truly the greatest gift we’ve been given as humans, and God has made that clear. God loved us so much that he decided to come down to Earth and live alongside us and then ultimately die for us (John 3:16). “And now faith, hope, and love abide, but the greatest of these is love” (1 Corinthians 13:13). Or if that’s not enough- in 1 John 4 it’s explicitly stated: God is love.
No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.
1 John 4: 12
So, I think it’s rather fun to celebrate this wonderful gift God has given to us. It’s a wonderful, special, beautiful thing to love, and it’s exciting to be able to celebrate that.
What is not wonderful is the way that this world has taken something so beautiful and made it into a money-making scheme. You do not need to buy your loved ones roses or chocolates to show them that they are loved. There are much simpler, more frugal ways to celebrate your gift of love that hopefully will ultimately be more a more special gift anyway. I hope you can find an idea off this list this year and can spend your time rather than your money this Valentine’s Day.

1. Take a Hot Chocolate Walk
This is a fun one to do with kids. Take some time to make the day special by taking a hot chocolate walk through the woods. Find a wooded trail to hike on, pack up some hot chocolate (and maybe some homemade muffins too!) and take a walk together. Taking the time to do something special like this will easily become a core memory for those involved, and maybe even a Valentine’s Day tradition!
2. Bake Valentine’s Day Cookies + Deliver Them to Others
God instructs us to love our neighbors, and bringing over baked goods is a great way to do that! Spend some time together with your family in the kitchen creating cut-out cookies, baking them, and frosting them, and then deliver them to friends or family. A large batch of cookies doesn’t cost much, but the memories you make with your family and the impact you’ll have on others will make an impact!
3. Create and Mail Watercolor Valentine’s Day Cards
Everyone likes to get cards in the mail, especially if they’re created in love! Even if you’re not especially artistic, there are a lot of simple watercolor tutorials you can follow (check out Pinterest and YouTube for inspiration!) to help you create a special note for someone you love. Grab some paint, write a sweet note, and send our your handmade Valentine. Odds are you’ll make their day with this simple, frugal gesture.
4. Build a Natural Bouquet
For those of us in the northwoods, there aren’t many beautiful blooming wildflowers growing in February. But that doesn’t mean you can’t still make a beautiful bouquet to show some love on Valentine’s Day. Go out into nature, cut some dried flowers and grasses, accent with evergreen branches and winter berries, and you’ll have a beautiful natural bouquet that will certainly bring joy to the recipient!
5. Make a Heart Scavenger Hunt
Another simple and frugal Valentine’s Day idea is to create a heart scavenger hunt. This is a great idea for the kids in your life! Cut out hearts of varying sizes and hide them around the house for your loved ones to find. Some variations might include:
- Writing a special note about the person seeking on each heart
- Have a letter written on each heart that can be unscrambled to share something special (like the location of a special treat or small gift!)
- Write clues that lead from heart to heart that ultimately lead to a small prize (like a special note from you!)
6. Host a Valentine’s Day Bonfire
Bonfires are not just for summer! Invite your loved ones over for a simple Valentine’s Day bonfire where you can reminisce about wonderful memories you’ve had together while making some special new ones too. You might even serve some of those Valentine’s Day cookies you made!
7. Host a Family Game Night
Host a family game night this year to spend time with your loved ones this Valentine’s Day. Play minute-to-win it games, trivia, have a cook-off competition, or just play board games. A night like this is sure to be a special memory for those who participated, and it may even become a family tradition!
8. Give Someone a Heart Attack
This is a good kind of heart attack! Cut out paper hearts, then write something special on each one about the person you are surprising. Then, in secret, cover that person’s window or door with the special hearts that share what you love about them! They will probably feel very loved by this easy and simple Valentine’s Day idea.
9. Perform Random Acts of Kindness
A great way to spread some of God’s love is to perform some random acts of kindness. You might consider cutting out paper hearts, writing a kind note to someone, and perhaps even include a small piece of candy with your note. Leave the little hearts around town for people to find! Some ideas of spots to hide the hearts include:
- In library books at the public library
- Behind boxes of food at the grocery store
- On a windshield of a car
- On a gas pump
You might also just offer up a meal to someone in your family or your neighbors with a little note to let them know how much you appreciate and love them.
10. Take Over Responsibilities for Someone You Love
Another really simple, but meaningful and frugal Valentine’s Day idea is to take over the responsibilities for someone you love. This might mean taking a day to do your husband’s chores for the day or for husbands to complete their wife’s chores for the day. Taking care of the animals, cleaning the house, folding and putting away laundry, and making dinner are all things that need to be done everyday, but can easily be done for another to show love and gratitude. Think of chores your family members do daily and decide how you might bless them by taking that chore off their hands for the day.
Closing + Final Thoughts
I think one of the most important things about celebrating Valentine’s Day is just remembering that you don’t have to spend a small fortune to show your family that you love them. Just a small kind gesture can really go a long way to helping someone feel loved.
