Deep in the heart of winter, many of us are starting to dream about our gardens. I know I am particularly excited to bite into those first fresh vegetables this summer- especially cucumbers and cherry tomatoes… Ah, how sweet it will be to enjoy those fresh from the garden once again! Summer is a season of bountiful harvests with fresh vegetables and sautéed fresh vegetables for every side dish. This, of course, is vastly different than the meals made up of preserved vegetables that many of us eat in the winter time. But even those vegetables couldn’t be on your table without first dreaming up your garden.
Before the garden can produce the food for your family, you’ll need to plan for it by choosing seeds. And knowing when to plant your seeds and transplants can be tricky. If you plant your seeds too early, you risk the chance of your seeds being leggy and weak, a characteristic you don’t want to have in a young plant. Plant too late and you’ll be behind the curve, limiting your harvest. Transplants must also be carefully planted based on the weather. Planting too early can result in a complete crop loss due to frost, meaning all of the work you put into seed starting will have been wasted. This planting calendar will help you plan out your 2024 Zone 4 garden so that you can have a successful and plentiful harvest this year. All you have to do is print and plant!

Things to Remember When Using this Planting Calendar
Even though these dates are the dates recommended by the Old Farmer’s Almanac based on the Zone 4 frost dates, it’s still important to pay attention to the weather patterns too. Think of this planting calendar as a guide and resource when it comes to planting, but also look to the weather before you put your transplants into the ground.
For example, even though the planting calendar might say that you can start planting your tomato transplants on a certain date, if the weather is still unstable and frost is still a possibility, there’s no harm in waiting until the last dates shared on the calendar. It would be a huge disappointment to lose all of your tomato crop simply because you relied solely on a calendar and didn’t also pay attention to the weather patterns. Use this planting calendar as a guide, but also remember to take into consideration the unpredictable nature of the spring weather in Zone 4.
